Anime Piracy Site KissAnime Shuts Down Forever

One of the largest illegal anime streaming sites has officially closed its doors after nearly a decade of business.

2020 has officially marked the end of an era for the anime piracy community, as one of the largest sites on the web that was a symbol of hope for many online pirates has officially been put to an end, forever.

KissAnime, an illegal streaming site that catered to fans of Japanese animation, along with its sister site KissManga have permanently shut down with no intentions of a resurrection. The site was launched in 2012 and was the home to one of the largest libraries of anime you could possibly find online, legal or illegal. It was notorious for its promiscuous advertisements although had a community of users that absolutely adored the site. Even users who have long since moved on from illegal streaming sites knew of its relevance, and to some still had a place in their hearts for the site.

“Our beta servers have been taken down, this could lead to the close of the website,” the moderators on the official KissAnime Discord server wrote early this morning. “We will make more announcement after we have the decision [sic].”

Another announcement message followed shortly after, “All files are taken down by copyright owners. KissManga and KissAnime will be closed forever. Thank you for your supports [sic]. Thank you for those years.”

When users try to visit the homepage of the site now, they are greeted with a message that reads, “All files are taken down by copyright owners. The site will be closed forever. Thank you for your supports [sic].”

KissAnime in particular has been a major thorn in the side of the anime industry. The streaming service used various tools and tactics to circumvent the identification of the site runners. Many attempts have been made to sue the owners of the site or use other methods to try and take the site down, all of which proved to be futile. At least until now.

There are many clones of KissAnime out on the web that were created to benefit off of the success of the original website. The clones have grown in even more prominence due to companies requesting takedowns of links to the original site in search engine results, leaving the fake ones to prosper. Most of these fakes are infested with malware that are just as bad or even worse than the original site’s. It is recommended to avoid these websites at all costs.

Many legal alternatives to KissAnime are available the public such as Crunchyroll, Funimation, HiDive, AnimeLab and more. Although none of them have as large of a library as that of the pirate site. Whether or not another site could claim that title remains to be seen.
