We're Launching an Anime Social Network, Supporting Artists and the Anime Industry

Over three years ago on July 7, 2017 a little blog called WonderfulSubs was released onto the web. From the very beginning we've had three goals; do our best to create engaging discussions as well as inform people of the latest news in the Anime world, grow a community of Anime fans worldwide, and most importantly, support the Anime industry however we can.

Three years later and the Anime fandom has expanded immensely, coming a long way from the days where Anime was just some odd niche that a few were into internationally, to finally breaking into the mainstream. Even large streaming services such as Netflix are prioritizing Anime titles, going as far as investing into producing original series for the platform. We've come from a time where shows like Dragon Ball Z were heavily criticized for its content to a time where it's celebrated with a float of Goku making the rounds in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Anime fans, we've come really far.

This was a major milestone for Anime fans around the world

In that time WonderfulSubs has also managed to expand, having grown a large following on social media and gaining thousands of visitors to our site everyday. It's been a blast getting to engage with fans who love what we love, and we want to thank you all for the support over the years, and a special thanks to those who helped us surpass our donation goal and raise $1000 over the last year to keep WonderfulSubs going. While we've managed to make some progress on our goals since our launch, we've decided to take things a few steps further.

That's why today we're announcing our initiative to develop a social networking platform, exclusive to Anime fans just like you.

Anime means the world to us and millions out there, but surprisingly there's a lack of a definitive place on the web for fans of the medium to congregate. While there are some platforms out there that come close, many of them don't have a central focus on Anime, lack specific tool sets that fans use all the time, or just provide buggy incomplete experiences. We think we can do better, because we want to do better. And in order to do that, we are going to utilize feedback from those who know best; the community itself.

But we don’t want to just stop there, as there is a cause larger than ourselves that needs to be addressed. As many of you may know the state of the Anime industry isn't exactly what you'd call "paradise". There are many issues that need to be addressed in the field, namely compensation and living costs for many of the animators who have worked on your favorite series, who are usually young and severely underpaid.

Several initiatives out there are already doing an awesome job at helping to alleviate the burden that the makers of our favorite creations have to deal with on a daily basis such as our personal favorite, the Animator Dormitory Project. Even the creator of popular manga series Love Hina is tackling another large problem regarding manga piracy with his project, Manga Library Z.

We deeply believe in these initiatives so instead of reinventing the wheel, we want to support them in any and every way that we can. That's why we are announcing that 50% of all WonderfulSubs LLC's revenue will be donated to these types of projects that keep the anime industry pumping and the people that make our little large-eyed friends comfortable. This includes ad revenue, subscriptions, and any other form of funding that we may receive.

Our new social media network will include all of the standard features you'd come to expect from any other social media platform such as a news feed, user profiles, user text, image, and video posts, comments, communities that users can post/share and discover new things from others, as well as built-in GIF image insertion for posts and comments. Of course as an anime site, it will include essential features such as user lists for tracking anime/manga and the ability to view series information, trailers, and reviews. Features will roll out over time as we work to develop and tweak things based on feedback from you guys.

A number of special badges will be available to users who meet specific requirements: Supporter, Verified, and Artist.

So let's get into the details.

wonderfulsubs supporter badge

Supporters are the blood of our community and keep us running so that we can provide you the best experience we can offer. Users with this badge gain additional features on their accounts such as the ability to set a GIF image for their avatar and cover photos, exclusive emotes, access to a private community reserved only for supporters, early access to new features, and more. Users can become a supporter by purchasing a $2 monthly subscription to our WS Supporter plan. Half of all proceeds go to initiatives such as those mentioned above.

wonderfulsubs verified badge

The Verified badge is reserved for users with some type of established notability or presence on the web, especially those at risk of impersonation. This can range anywhere from influencers to organizations. Details on the requirements for this badge will be communicated in the future, but if you believe you fit the bill you may contact us at verify@wonderfulsubs.com for more info.

wonderfulsubs artist badge

Last but not least, the Artist badge is one we hold near and dear to our hearts. As we mentioned in our ongoing Spooktober Art Contest article, artists are the blood of the anime industry, for anime is an art. While many other non-niche focused sites highlight notable users such as musicians and gamers, there seems to be a stunning lack of recognition for illustrators. We want to change that, and have committed to creating a special badge to highlight the artists of our community, regardless of art style. Similar to the Verified badge, certain notability requirements will have to be met to obtain this badge, but will not be as strict.

We plan to open up user registration sometime in the first half of November, and will fully launch our platform on November 20, the same day our art contest ends. More details regarding the above will be revealed in the coming weeks leading up to the launch, so be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and/or Instagram for updates. If you want to follow our progress and help beta test features before launch, be sure to join our Discord server.
